“HOW IS HE?” LORENZO asked as she approached.

The street wasn’t much clearer than when she’d left, and there weren’t as many people working on it anymore. A cold wind had whipped up, biting at her tingling skin.

She carefully stepped over piles of loose rubble to get to where he was standing. “He’s alright. The cut’s pretty deep, so Bega doesn’t want him lifting anything with his hand like that. She doesn’t want it to get bigger or infected, but he’s already kinda sick of sitting around.”

Lorenzo nodded. “Sounds like him. What took so long?”

Tessa sighed. “They needed someone to help with a generator, but then I got electrocuted trying to rig something up. Bega made me rest for a while, but I’m good now.”

He raised his eyebrow. “Working with Ollie?”

She nodded. “How’d you know?”

He looked around. “Not the first time that’s happened.”

“Oh.” Tessa glanced around the near-empty street. “Where is everyone?”

“Found a new alley. It’s clearer.”

“Oh, cool.”

He nodded and turned to an alley. “Let’s go.”

Lorenzo walked through the rubble to the edge of the street. Tessa followed him as he ducked down an alleyway between two buildings. It was small, barely three feet across. The occasional rat scurried through patches of decaying garbage that lined the passage. Tessa covered her nose with her coat collar to block out the stench.

They emerged on the side of a wider passage. Snow covered the ground in a thin film, washing the new pathway in white.

Tessa looked the corridor up and down. Most of the people who she’d seen working on the previous road were now picking up small bits of rubble strewn about the snow-sprinkled pavement.

“Wow, it’s a lot better over here. How long do you think it’ll take to finish?” Tessa asked. Her feet burned to get back on the road; every second she spent here was another that could have been put toward getting to her destination.

Lorenzo shrugged.

She was extra cautious about looking for glass pieces in the rubble. After seeing what had happened to Freddy’s hand, the last thing she wanted was to get blindsided by pieces of a shattered window.

The sun had risen to directly overhead, and some of the snow had started to melt. The sky was empty, a bright blue dome above them.

“Alright, people! Listen up!”

Tessa looked down the alley to see Wendy standing atop a pile of rubble, bellowing to everyone working on clearing the street.

“Bega just called for the first car! That means we gotta finish up this road ASAP!”

Everyone looked around and nodded. There wasn’t that much left to do, so it would be easy enough.

“I need about five or six people to come set up the infirmary. Xavier, grab a couple guys and come with me,” Wendy commanded. “Y’all got a half hour! If a tire pops, I’m making all y’all carry everyone who can’t walk here from the old base, got it?”

People grumbled and turned back to what they were doing. A handful of guys headed to the buildings to set up beds and medical equipment in the infirmary.
